The charm of Telugu movies remained supreme even in 2023, as the key genres tackled ranged from romance, comedies and family-centric to thriller and horror. There are also must-watch films that not only received love from the audience but also critical acclaim.
The quintessential charms of a family drama will never go out of style, and Ranga Marthanda is a classic example of the same. This heartbreaking movie – a remake of the 2016 Marathi film Natsamrat – is centered on a revered theater artist who bequeaths his wealth to his ungrateful children and his loving wife. Prakash Raj and Ramya Krishna deliver impeccable performances in this emotionally stirring Krishna Vamsi directorial.
There’s an emotional catharsis you’re promised by the end of Balagam, a must-watch slice-of-life film starring Priyadarshi, Kavya Kalyanram and Sudhakar Reddy. Set in a village, the Venu Yeldandi directorial depicts the tale of a family that is affected by the sudden death of their sprightly patriarch and the traditional rituals that follow with the village folk.
Friendship tropes in movies are an overrated concept, but an eccentric take on the same is seen in Mad. Starring Sangeeth Shobhan, Narne Nithin, Ram Nithin and Sri Gouri Priya Reddy, the Kalyan Shankar directorial explores the chaotic campus lives of four engineering students.
If you’re heavily into romantic comedies, then Samajavaragamana is the apt choice for you. The Ram Abbaraju directorial is centered on a middle-class man, who ends up tutoring his father (who has to earn his Bachelor’s Degree to inherit his ancestral property) and love interest (who is poor in studies). Starring Sree Vishnu, Reba Monica John and Naresh, the rom-com excels with its crisp and witty storytelling.
A quirky romantic drama film that won hearts this year is Baby. The Sai Rajesh Neelam directorial explores a modern-age romance between high school buddies, with a love triangle interlaced. The coming-of-age movie features impressive performances by its star cast including Vaishnavi Chaitanya, Anand Deverakonda and Viraj Ashwin.
You’ll be astounded by the technical marvel of Virupaksha. The Karthik Varma Dandu directorial has an intriguing storyline focusing on the mysterious deaths taking place in a village and orchestrated by an unknown person’s supernatural practices. Virupaksha stars Sai Dharam Tej, Samyuktha and Sunil.
Dasara, featuring an action-packed performance by the charismatic Nani, proved to be a cinematic experience that you can’t miss. The period-action drama film is set in the backdrop of Singareni coal mines near Godavarikhani of Telangana and centers on a troublemaker, who steals coal. Dasara also stars Keerthy Suresh and Dheekshith Shetty.
