New riverboat begins sailing from Port of New Orleans

American Queen Steamboat Company on Monday christened the U.S.-flagged American Duchess, a 166-guest riverboat that set sail from the Port of New Orleans.
The boat is the first all-suite paddle wheeler on an American river and officially joins the company’s American Queen, which sails the Mississippi River, as well as the Pacific Northwest-based American Empress.
Marissa Applegate, daughter of chairman and CEO John Waggoner, broke a bottle of bourbon on the hull prior to the boat’s embarkation.
According to a news release, the boat was built in Louisiana and created 200 American jobs. After construction and sailings on flagship American Queen in 2017, the company has secured an economic impact of $8.8 million in direct expenditures in the state.
Other Louisiana stops on the American Duchess itinerary include the Nottoway Antebellum Mansion in White Castle, the historic district in downtown St. Francisville and museums and attractions in Baton Rouge.
The boat touts the largest suites on the river and features the first two-level loft suites – the first of its kind on the river. The American Duchess has suites ranging from 250 square feet to 550-square-foot loft suites, two dining venues and a menu similar to that of the American Queen, which offers regionally-inspired foods.
The American Duchess departed on her maiden voyage upriver with stops in Natchez and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Other stops will include Memphis, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; and St. Louis, Missouri. The trip ends in Red Wing, Minnesota.
Monday’s 23-day trip was sold out, according to company officials. Guests leaving New Orleans had a pre-cruise hotel night stay at the Roosevelt Hotel downtown.
Port officials have said inland riverboat cruising has grown 40 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, as the port welcomed 21,391 passengers on three homeported paddle wheelers sailing on the lower Mississippi River.
