WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The Texas Sports Hall of Fame is preparing to host an event that blends the best of Texas sports with the best of Texas whiskies as the museum in Waco opens its doors for the first-ever Legends of Texas Whiskey Festival.
The unique event will bring together nearly two dozen premier distillers to offer Central Texans a taste of whisky with a side of Texas sports.
Bruce Gietzen, who is an executive member of the museum’s board, said the event will truly be a first.
“Waco’s never had a whiskey festival that we’re aware of and the thing that makes us unique is we’re inviting only Texas distillers,” Gietzen said.
Board Chairman Mike Harder said the board wanted to find a unique way to not only raise money for the museum but get locals on the grounds of the space which has inducted 400 Texans into the Hall of Fame.
The museum also boasts 13,00 pieces of memorabilia.
“It’s been in Waco for 30 years and there are many people who have not been to the Texas Sports Hall of Fame,” Harder said.  “It’s a great jewel here in Waco.”
“We have a museum full of Texas sports heroes and so having the Texas distillers only, it was kind of a good blend, so to speak,” Gietzen added.
There will be nearly 20 Texas-based distillers represented with more than 40 whiskeys available for sampling.
The featured distillers attending include Balcones Distilling, Milam & Greene, Fierce Whiskers Distillery, Austin Craft Spirits Co., Devils River Whiskey, 1845 Distilling Company, Acre Distilling Co, Lockwood Distilling Company, Wilson Valley Mercantile, William Price, Texas Tail Distillery and Ironroot Republic Distilling.   A few others may be added to the list.
The festival will also include Texas-made cigars.
