SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Do you know where you’ll be in the next year? How about the next 20?
If the answer involves living in South Bend, the city would like a word with you! On Tuesday, the city hosted the first community event to get residents involved in the planning process for 2045, and it all started at the Leighton Auditorium at 6 p.m.
Residents got a chance to listen to guest speaker Casey Steinbacher, a national urban innovation strategy expert and the founder of Finding Next. Steinbacher shared the story of Durham, North Carolina, and how the downtown was revived through “placed-based efforts.”
“You have to figure out an understanding of who in your community needs to be represented in that conversation, ”Steinbacher said. “Local business’, young adults, communities of color, the universities there’s pieces of all this.”
A second event, the Envision Downtown 2045, will take place on Feb. 22 at Beutter-Kernan Hall in the St. Joseph County Public Library’s Community Learning Center from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., with the workshops happening at the top of the aforementioned hours. Between the workshops, residents can still come in and learn more.
The Envision workshop will happen again on Tuesday, March 5, at Ballroom A at the St. Joseph County Public Library’s Community Learning Center.
