Spring may be in the air, but at first glance the latest additions to Amazon Prime Video’s slate of TV shows and films for March 2024 aren’t looking like particularly fertile ground. The number of new titles being added within a standard Prime Video subscription is only around 70 or so, compared with the hundred-plus we see some months.
Look closer, though, and it turns out that what Prime Video’s March 2024 additions may lack in quantity, they make up for in quality. Especially when it comes to its roster of back catalogue film additions. Before picking out the best of these golden oldies, though, let’s first get stuck into the all-new content coming to Prime Video US (and Freevee) courtesy of Amazon’s own ‘Originals’ studio.
Five Nights At Freddy's arrives on Prime Video on March 5.
These kick off (pun definitely intended) with Amazon’s reboot of legendary Patrick Swayze hit, “Road House”. This time round we have a bulked up Jake Gyllenhaal starring as an ex-UFC fighter turned bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse who ends up taking on a vicious local criminal gang and a lethal hitman. Gyllenhaal usually elevates anything he’s in, while director Doug Liman has proved with hits like the original “Mr & Mrs Smith” film and cult favourite “Edge Of Tomorrow” (AKA “Live. Die. Repeat”) that he knows his way round an action film.
Two other Amazon Original films making their debut in March 2024 are “Ricky Stanicky” and “Frida”. The former is a comedy starring John Cena, William H Macy and Zac Efron and directed by Peter Farrelly (of the “There’s Something About Mary”, “Dumb And Dumber” and “Kingpin” Farrelly brothers) that tells the story of three childhood buddies who invent an imaginary friend they can use as an alibi to get them out of trouble - which works fine until they have to employ a a washed-up actor to make their imaginary friend real. “Ricky Stanicky” is available to watch from March 7.
“Frida”, meanwhile, charts the “life, mind and heart” of artist Frida Kahlo using her own words, as taken from her diaries, letters, essays and print interviews.
Fans of Amazon’s excellent superhero animation series “Invincible”, meanwhile, now only have to wait until March 14 for the second part of the second season to drop, while a second season of “American Rust” is due to arrive on March 28. “American Rust: Broken Justice” finds Del Harris and Maura Tierney faced with a string of seemingly unrelated murders that hint at a wider conspiracy, while still trying to rebuild their lives after the events of Season One.
A brand new series making its debut on Prime Video on March 28 is “The Baxters”. Based on the best-selling novels by Karen Kingsbury, ”The Baxters” explores the family dramas of Elizabeth and John Baxter and their five grown-up children, with the first season focusing on the one of the Baxter children having to figure out where to turn after finding out her husband has been having an affair.
Amazon's remake of Road House lands on Prime Video on March 21.
It’s getting customary for Prime Video to drop a new stand-up comedy special every month, and for March 24 this honor goes to “Tig Notaro: Hello Again”, where Notaro finds the funny side of every day life, from cute family moments to health scares and awkward misunderstandings.
A new half-hour special of “Dinner Party Diaries With Jose Andres” lands on March 19, meanwhile, and features Jamie Lee Curtis, Bryan Cranston and O’Shea Jackson Jr mucking in with chef Andres as he puts together a selection of his favourite recipes.
Amazon’s Freevee ‘channel’ has one new fiction series arriving in March (on the 12th): “Boat Story”. This follows two strangers who stumble on a wrecked boat full of cocaine who decide to sell the drugs and share the cash - only to find themselves, unsurprisingly, hunted by both gangsters and the police.
The only other Amazon Original content to look out for in March is live sport. Prime Video’s inaugural pay-per-view presentation of a Premier Boxing Champions event live streams on March 30, covering Keith Thurman vs Tim Tszyu, and Rolando Romero vs Isaac Cruz. March 15 sees the start of Prime Video’s coverage of the National Women’s Soccer League, which will see games streaming every Friday at either 8pm or 10pm EDT.
Let’s turn now to the list of films (fairly) new and old that are being added to Prime Video US in March within your monthly subscription. There’s a full list at the end of this article, but let’s pick out a few highlights for movie fans to look out for.
The three newest titles to be added to the service are Blumhouse Productions’ adaptation of popular game “Five Night’s At Freddy’s” (March 5); “Marlowe”, in which Liam Neeson takes on the role of the classic detective (March 7); and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” (March 12). Honestly, though, none of this trio have really anything to commend them other than their recency, so let’s move swiftly on to more interesting stuff.
Part 2 of Season 2 of animated series Invincible arrives on March 14.
Kicking off (yes, I meant it again) with the arrival of 1989’s “Road House” on March 1, allowing martial arts fans to compare Amazon’s new remake with the original. Sticking with the martial arts theme, “Bulletproof Monk” also arrives on March 1. Personally I think this is a rare example of a poor Chow Yun-Fat film - but it seems to have developed a cult following of sorts over the years, so if you’re wanting something to accompany a boozy Saturday night in, this could do the job.
Much (much) better, though, is 2001’s “Battle Royale”. While maybe more of a violent dystopian thriller than a true martial arts film, “Battle Royale” did “Hunger Games” first and on steroids, resulting in a true influential original that still feels fresh and disturbing today. Look out for this one from March 31.
Jason Statham would probably also like me to categorise 2021’s “Wrath Of Man” (directed by Guy Ritchie) as a martial arts movie, though in truth it’s just a particularly fun version of the down to earth dude who happens to have flying fists schtick that’s made Statham such an unlikely star over the years. This one arrives on Prime Video on March 23.
If all this hasn’t been enough to scratch your fight movie itch, then there’s always “Kung Fu Panda” on Freevee from March 1…
If you’re in the mood for a super-hero film, there are three good additions coming Prime Video’s way in March. Tim Burton’s “Batman” and “Batman Returns” both drop on March 1, while the brilliant “The LEGO Batman Movie” arrives on March 19.
Moving to more ‘human’ affairs, Kevin Costner gets the ball rolling with not one but two outstanding baseball-based efforts: “Bull Durham”, in which a veteran minor-leagues baseball player has to coach a cocky young pitcher to get him ready for the major leagues, and “Field Of Dreams” in which… well, surely you all know this one by now. If you build it they will come, basically. Both of these sporting classics arrive on March 1.
“The Untouchables” keeps the Kevin Costner winning streak going, again on March 1, as his Elliott Ness joins forces with an Oscar-winning Sean Connery to try and take down Robert De Niro’s Al Capone in Brian De Palma’s 1987 crime classic.
Bull Durham, one of my favourite sport movies, will be added to Prime Video from March 1.
Going back further in time gets us to 1963’s ever-green “The Great Escape” (nothing more needs to be said about that one surely?), Michael Winner’s interesting 1971 revisionist Western “Lawman”, 1954’s flawed but glamorous and sharply written “The Barefoot Contessa” (with Humphrey Bogart and Ava Gardner), Martin Scorsese’s fantastically atmospheric The Band concert documentary “The Last Waltz”, and Walter Hill’s gritty “The Warriors”, where a street gang has to battle its way across a hostile New York to get back to its home turf. All of these oldie but goodies arrive on Prime Video on March 1.
Madonna, next, shockingly proves she can actually act - albeit in a role that appears literally written for her younger self - in big-haired 1980s comedy drama “Desperately Seeking Susan”, while a brilliant Kirsten Dunst powers the ultimate cheerleader film, 2000’s “Bring It On” - a movie so good/beloved it spawned a theatrical musical that’s still doing the rounds today.
“Friday Night Lights” delivers a powerful look at the relationship between college football and small-town America, and things take a cult post-apocalyptic turn in “Waterworld” (with Kevin Costner starring yet again).
Ben Affleck reminds us that he can direct and write as well as act with superior crime thriller “Gone Baby Gone”, where a private detective tries to track down a kidnapped girl in Boston. Or if you’re feeling in the mood for something really brutal and dark, Kim Jee-woon’s “I Saw The Devil” tells the happy tale of a man who gets caught in a disturbing cat and mouse game with the psychopath who murdered his fiancee.
The original “Pet Sematary” adaptation keeps things feeling bleak, too, while Tim Burton delivers a mercifully more fun mix of the macabre and amusing with his adaptation of “Sleepy Hollow”. Starring, of course, Johnny Depp, as the detective trying to get to the bottom of a series of gruesome, seemingly supernatural murders in a small 18th century American town.
Director JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg team up to deliver another good ‘monster’ movie in the shape of “Super 8”, where a group of teens find themselves having to take on a mysterious creature after a train derails in their small town.
Battle Royale is a brutal, compelling forerunner of The Hunger Games. It arrives within a Prime ... [+] Video subscription from March 31.
Historical dramas are well served by March’s Prime Video catalogue movie additions too, in the shape of the under-rated Liam Neeson-starring story of Scottish hero “Rob Roy”; stylish Sam Mendes’ drama “Road To Perdition”, where a mob enforcer and his son in the 1930s seek vengeance against the mobster who murdered the rest of their family; “The Imitation Game”, which tells the remarkable story of Alan Turing’s creation of the world’s first ‘computer’ in order to break Germany’s Enigma code machine during WWII, and his subsequent persecution for homosexuality; and “Seabiscuit”, which tells the engaging true story of the rivalry between two very different race horses - and jockeys - in pre-WWII America. Apart from The Imitation Game, which arrives on March 29, all this long list of strong movies land on Prime Video on March 1.
Wrapping up Prime Video’s bumper crop of quality March movie additions are a couple of comedies: Woody Allen’s charming “The Purple Rose Of Cairo”, about an actor who literally walks off the screen of a film and into the real life of a down on her luck waitress; and “The Madness Of King George”, Nicholas Hytner’s Oscar-winning adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play about the deteriorating mental health of King George III. These are both available, again, from March 1.
If you don’t mind your films being interrupted by adverts, there are a couple of March catalogue movie highlights to look out for, too, on Freevee. The 2020 remake of “The Invisible Man” delivers a surprisingly tense and slick update on the classic sci-fi story from March 19, boosted by a committed performance by Elizabeth Moss. While from March 1 you can enjoy excellent character-driven modern western “Hell Or High Water”, starring Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine.
The 2020 remake of The Invisible Man is a really effective thriller, and joins the Prime Video ... [+] subscription from March 19.
Now let’s wrap things up with the full list of every new title coming to Prime Video in March 2024.
