A big-budget series adaptation of a best-selling sci-fi epic, a new season of an acquired Peacock gem, a spinoff series of a Guy Ritchie crime feature, the return of one of the world’s most grueling reality competition shows, Millie Bobby Brown finding herself in all sorts of bother and Adam Sandler getting serious in a space drama are among the standout films and series hitting Netflix in March.
Funnyman Sandler is deathly serious in Johan Renck’s Spaceman, Netflix’s big feature release this month that debuts March 1. The film, an adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel Spaceman of Bohemia, sees Sandler play a Czech astronaut sent to the farthest reaches of space, just as his personal life is falling to pieces. Sandler’s character must keep his sanity and his only supposed company is a giant alien arachnid. The film, which premiered out of competition at the Berlin Film Festival, also stars Carey Mulligan, Isabella Rossellini, Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin and Paul Dano.

Launching March 7 is The Gentlemen, a very loose series spinoff of Guy Ritchie’s 2019 comedy crime feature of the same name. The show centers on an aristocrat who inherits his late father’s estate — and with it, his late father’s involvement in a marijuana business. The series, which doesn’t make reference to the film or feature any of the characters from it, stars Theo James, Kaya Scodelario, Daniel Ings, Vinnie Jones, Giancarlo Esposito, Joely Richardson and the cockney’s cockney Ray Winstone. The Hollywood Reporter‘s reviewer writes that the series “is “adorned with the usual Guy Ritchie bag of tricks. There’s slow-motion and speed-ramping and playing about with time in general; this show loves to cut away from a dramatic moment only to cheekily circle back later.”
On March 8, Netflix releases the fantasy film Damsel, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Angela Bassett, Robin Wright and the ever-busy Ray Winstone. In the feature, Brown plays Princess Elodie, an outwardly typical damsel in distress who learns to fight for herself. Damsel is directed by 28 Weeks Later filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.
The first two seasons of Girls5eva, the musical comedy executive produced by Tina Fey, premiered on Peacock, but the future of the show was cast into doubt after it struggled to find an audience on NBC’s streaming platform. In October, Netflix struck a deal to save the show, producing a third season as well as carrying the first two, all of which debut on the streamer March 14. Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell are all back as the band continues their climb back to relevance.
On March 19, a second season of the survival reality show Physical 100 debuts. The show, which according to the streamer was the first Korean unscripted series to be No. 1 on the Netflix Global Top 10 TV (Non-English) list, will see a new group of 100 contestants challenge each other in punishing physical games to become the last person standing. Physical 100 is part of a comprehensive slate of Korean shows and films Netflix is launching in 2024.
Netflix’s big show this month, based on budget, hype and expectation, is the series adaptation of 3 Body Problem, which debuts March 21. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss along with Alexander Woo are behind this rather ambitious adaptation of Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past book trilogy, which debuted in China in 2008 to enormous popularity and acclaim. The first book, The Three-Body Problem, was the first Asian novel ever to win a Hugo Award for best novel. Given the background, expectations are high with the TV series adaptation and the showrunners spoke about the pressure of delivering in a THR cover story from January. The international cast features Benedict Wong, Jess Hong, Jovan Adepo, Eiza González, John Bradley, Alex Sharp, Rosalind Chao, Zine Tseng and Jonathan Pryce.
Movies added to Netflix in March include 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, A Madea Family Funeral, Beverly Hills Ninja, Bonnie & Clyde, The Disaster Artist, Dumb and Dumber, Godzilla (2014), Love & Basketball, National Lampoon’s Animal House, Out of Africa, Step Brothers, Tammy and Yesterday.
