Bhamakalapam 2, the sequel to the web film ‘Bhamakalapam’ released in 2022, has premiered on the OTT platform Aha today. Read our review to know how the heist thriller is.
Story:
Due to her troubled past, Anupama (Priyamani) vows to keep to herself. Partnering with her maid Shilpa (Sharanya Pradeep), she runs a restaurant and enters the Cooking Idol 2023 competition hosted by tycoon Antony Lobo (Anuj Gurwara), who has sinister intentions. When things turn dark, Anupama finds herself coerced by corrupt NCB officer Sadanand (Raghu Mukharjee) to steal the competition’s trophy. Why does Anupama have to help Sadanand? Why does Sadanand threaten her for the trophy? What is Antony’s plan? What does Anupama do ultimately? The movie has all the answers.
Plus Points:
The story begins with a few glimpses of the ending of Bhama Kalapam, but this time, the makers changed the genre from crime comedy to a heist thriller, sparking more curiosity among audiences.
One of the major highlights is Priyamani’s impressive performance in both installments. In this latest installment, she portrays a more confident and less innocent character, which is reflected in her acting.
Sharanya Pradeep also delivers a satisfactory performance and adds to the humour. Raghu Mukherjee’s portrayal as the antagonist is also noteworthy, while the remaining cast members justify their roles effectively.
Minus Points:
While the decision to continue the franchise with a heist drama is commendable, the script could have been better executed. Some scenes feel overly dramatic, and certain plot developments are predictable, diminishing the overall impact. Injecting more twists and turns could have enhanced the gripping narrative.
Sharanya Pradeep’s character could have been further developed to inject more humour into this serious heist thriller. Seerat Kapoor’s inclusion seems primarily for glamour and lacks substantial scope to perform.
The film’s pacing takes time to build momentum, and the climax feels less convincing. It appears to be a strategic decision by the makers to extend the franchise.
Technical Aspects:
Abhimanyu Tadimeti’s direction is competent, but more attention to detail could have enhanced audience engagement, particularly in the first half. The background score by Prasanth R Vihari lacks impact and fails to elevate suspense. However, the cinematography by Deepak Yaragera nicely captures the richness of the visuals, supported by commendable production values. Editing in the first hour could have been tighter.
Verdict:
On the whole, Bhamakalapam 2 provides entertainment in parts. Priyamani’s admirable performance and Sharanya Pradeep’s contributions are the film’s positives. However, the film suffers from predictability and pacing issues. If you enjoyed Bhama Kalapam, you may find its sequel intriguing, but manage your expectations accordingly.
