As 2023 draws to a close, we take a closer look at the top five Malayalam movies that have not only captured hearts but also earned critical acclaim, with one even making its way to the prestigious Oscars.
Dr. Biju’s Adrishya Jalakangal emerges as a groundbreaking anti-war film. It features stellar performances by Tovino Thomas, Nimisha Sajayan, and Indrans. It was released on November 24, 2023. The film is set in an Orwellian world gripped by government control and the ominous threat of an unknown war.

Kaathal – The Core, is directed by Jeo Baby and features Mammootty and Jyothika. It takes center stage as a family drama with unexpected twists. Released in 2023, the film follows the story of George Devassy, a retired bank official played by Mammootty, and his wife Omana, portrayed by Jyothika. The plot takes an unexpected turn when George decides to contest the Panchayat Elections, leading to a divorce filing by his wife, who claims he is in a homosexual relationship with a friend. 2018, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, is a survival drama based on the severe floods that ravaged Kerala in 2018.
