NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - SEPTEMBER 12: (L-R) Changbin, I.N., Han, Felix, Lee Know, Seungmin, Hyunjin and ... [+]
It’s no secret that albums from some of the biggest names in K-pop sell incredibly well these days. Stars from South Korea regularly rank among the bestselling in the world, and this trend is only growing as time goes by. While the genre has been surging for many years, the style’s performance in 2023 is truly astounding.
According to the IFPI–the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry–19 of the 20 bestselling albums in the world in 2023 came from from K-pop musicians. That’s according to the organization’s ranking of the top-selling full-lengths and EPs all around the globe last year, which was released a short time ago.
Seventeen leads the charge, with their album FML landing at No. 1. The title sold a whopping 6.4 million copies globally last year. That’s more than one million sales ahead of the runner-up.
The ranking of the bestselling albums in the world in 2023 includes many of the top stars in the K-pop genre–pretty much anyone who released music last year. The lineup features beloved acts like NCT Dream, Stray Kids, Exo, and many others.
Five K-pop acts manage to appear on the list with more than one title, with each scoring a pair of placements. Seventeen ranks highest, and they’re the only band to land two top five wins. Their CD FML sits at No. 1, while Seventeenth Heaven is just a few spots further down at No. 4. Fellow South Korean superstars Stray Kids, IVE, Aespa, and Enhypen all manage the same feat.
Only one Western musician sold well enough to crack the IFPI’s sales chart. Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) lands at No. 6 with 2.8 million copies sold. Many of her other projects performed incredibly well when looking at all forms of consumption, but they didn’t sell at least 1.5 million copies–the lowest sum on the ranking.
