GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Crowds are expected to fill the South Carolina Children’s Theatre this weekend with the spotlight on a big screen instead of the stage. The 2024 Reedy Reels Film Festival has returned to the venue with a three-day schedule of movie-watching, workshops and parties.
“When the lights go down, you can be taken to a different place in time and all over the world, meet interesting folks, actually learn something and be inspired,” Ken Seay told FOX Carolina News. “It’s an uplifting event and the quality of films is amazing.”
This year, the festival will feature more than 60 short films that were chosen from more than 150 submissions from across the country and globe. While some of the films are international, Seay said most are local or regional productions.
Seay, who used to teach film at Clemson University, co-founded the Reedy Reels Film Festival with a former student, Matt Foster. The inaugural festival took place in 2015 at one of Clemson’s satellite campuses, known as the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR). Seay said it’s incredible how popular the event has become after a modest start.
“We have 37 five-star reviews on FilmFreeway, which is awesome,” Seay said, referring to an online platform that streamlines the process of submitting entries and buying tickets to attend film festivals. “They love the film festival and they love Greenville, so it’s a winning combination.”
Seay said festival-goers will be impressed by the quality of films, and independent filmmakers will appreciate the networking opportunities with directors, actors, photographers, audio specialists.
“They all collaborate to come up with some really fun and interesting projects,” Seay said.
The festival begins Friday at 5:00 p.m. with a reception and two hours of film-watching. The event ends Sunday evening with an awards presentation.
