Hynes Charter School and University of New Orleans have partnered to open a new charter school next year with their shared names.
On Thursday, the two institutions announced intentions to open Hynes Charter School-UNO in the 2019-2020 academic school year.
The school will initially open with about 75 kindergarten students and potentially grow to a full kindergarten through 8th grade charter school.
According to a news release, the school will focus “on a well-rounded, core curriculum with a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) focus.” It will also offer a French Immersion program. Hynes Charter School-UNO will replicate the current Hynes curriculum, core values and framework.
Hynes CEO Michelle Douglas said she is thrilled to be able to offer a Hynes education to more families.
“Last year, nearly 1,000 students applied to Hynes for 75 available Kindergarten seats,” Douglas said in a news release. “This partnership between (UNO) and the (Hynes) team will allow us to expand the number of students we serve and the number of leaders and teachers we train.”
Hynes Charter School is located in Lakeview. The new campus will be temporarily housed at the Jean Gordon swing space, located at 6101 Chatham Dr., until the new facility is constructed on UNO’s campus.
According to the news release, Hynes is the highest demand, non-selective admissions elementary school in Orleans Parish.
Hynes plans to host three open house tours for parents and prospective students of both campuses. The tours will be from 8:30-10:30 a.m. November 28, December 11 and January 9 at its Lakeview gymnasium at 990 Harrison Ave.
Hynes Charter School-UNO plans to add at least one grade each year until maximizing enrollment.
