According to sources from Chennai, the makers of much-hyped ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ have reportedly screened some portions of their action adventure to select distributors in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. “Telugu distributors were shown some portions since it was sold for Rs 180 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana but no such luck for Tamil and other language distributors,” he says. With Tamil distributors unwilling to cough up big sums for releasing Prabhas-Deepika starrer in over 100 theatres in Tamil Nadu, the makers would be releasing the film on ‘commission’ basis. “Tamil distribution houses release movies on commission basis and have no practice of paying advance amounts so distributors are holding negotiations,’ he adds.
In fact, Prabhas has a good market in Tamil Nadu and his films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Salaar’ had decent enough openings in neighbouring states. “Prabhas has expanded his market in Tamil Nadu and has gained a huge fan following among Tamil movie goers with his larger-than-life action roles,” he points out. Prabhas mostly registered sensational openings in two Telugu states and this time, he wants to boost the collections of ‘Kalki’ in Tamil Nadu too. “With June 27 being a good day without any competition, Prabhas has a good chance to set a new opening record,” he adds.
With legendary actor Kamal Hassan playing a significant role and his unique avatar as shown in the trailer, has triggered a lot of interest around the film. “Kamal Hassan’s dark role is expected to help ‘Kalki to do well among Tamil viewers and his combination with Prabhas will give it a fillip,’ he concludes.
