Malayalam movies have been having a fantastic run at the box office in 2024. The industry, which has been receiving immense love from audiences, also performed exceedingly well at the box office. When the year is stepping into its second half, Malayalam movies stand tall with a total box office collection of a whopping Rs. 1000 crore. The industry has four blockbusters so far, including Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham, Aavesham, and Premalu.
Malayalam movie box office 2024 - collects Rs. 1000 crore
The recent updates from the trade experts suggest that the total box office collection of all the films produced by the Malayalam film industry in 2024 so far, has crossed the Rs. 1000 crore mark. For the uninitiated, Malayalam cinema is touching this major milestone, for the first time in its history.

The Malayalam film industry had a disappointing start in January 2024, after some well-made films including Aattam, bombed at the box office. Jayaram’s Abraham Ozler emerged as the first super hit of the year and collected around Rs. 43 crore within its lifetime run. The second big release of January 2024, the Mohanlal starrer Malaikottai Vaaliban ended up as a below-average affair, by collecting just Rs. 30 crore at the worldwide box office.

The glorious run of February 2024 releases
However, things started changing in February 2024, with the release of Premalu, which features Naslen and Mamitha Baiju in the lead roles. The romantic comedy collected over Rs. 136 crore at the worldwide box office. The next release Bramayugam, the black-and-white horror film that stars Mammootty in the lead role earned super hit status by collecting over Rs. 60 crore within its lifetime run.
Later, Malayalam cinema had its all-time highest-grossing film Manjummel Boys, the survival thriller directed by Chidambaram. The movie, which is not headlined by any superstars, went on to collect over Rs. 242 crore within its lifetime run at the worldwide box office. Thus, the multi-starrer emerged as the first-ever Malayalam film to open the Rs. 200 crore club in the industry.

March 2024 to present
Prithviraj Sukumaran and Blessy’s ambitious project Aadujeevitham released in March 2024, surprised the industry by emerging as the second highest grossing film of the year. The survival drama, which is continuing its glorious run at the theatres, has collected over Rs. 160 crore at the worldwide box office.
Later, Malayalam cinema had another blockbuster in 2024 with the Fahadh Faasil starrer, Aavesham. The movie went on to collect over Rs. 155 crore within its lifetime run at the theatres. Varshangalkku Shesham, the Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial which was released on the same day, also earned super hit status and collected over Rs. 80 crore at the box office.

The beginning of May 2024 was not a great time for the industry, as the much-awaited films including Tovino Thomas’ Nadikar, ended up as below-average affairs. However, the industry is now back on track with the success of Guruvayoorambala Nadayil, the recently released Prithviraj Sukumaran-Basil Joseph film. With the massive release of Mammootty’s Turbo on May 23, Thursday, the industry is expected to continue its success streak.
