Take a look at the movies and TV shows that are hitting the streaming service this month.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

May is comedy month on Netflix and to coincide with the service’s in-person Netflix Is a Joke Fest in Los Angeles, the streamer is releasing the multi-night event John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A. The six episodes will unspool live on Netflix over as many nights, with the special formally launching on May 3, with additional episodes debuting nightly, beginning 7 p.m. PT, from May 6-10.
Continuing with the comedy, on May 5, Netflix launches its Greatest Roasts of All Time: GROAT series, with the Roast of Tom Brady up first. The NFL legend should expect a rough ride despite being an executive producer on the series. GROAT executive producers include Brady for 199 Productions; Casey Patterson for Casey Patterson Entertainment; and Jeff Ross and Carol Donovan.
Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt will be forced to reopen old wounds in the rom-com Mother of the Bride, that debuts on Netflix on May 9. The film centers on Emma (Miranda Cosgrove), who shocks her mom, Lana (Shields), with the revelation that she is getting married in a month in Thailand. More complications ensue when Lana learns that the father of the groom is Will (Bratt), a cad who broke her heart years ago. Sounds rather awkward. The film is directed by Mean Girls and Freaky Friday filmmaker Mark Waters.
The most hotly anticipated new addition to Netflix this month is the first part of season three of Bridgerton. The British period drama, produced by Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland, is a global phenomenon, and the third installment is likely to reignite the public’s lust for all things Regency. Season three focuses on Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton’s characters Penelope and Colin who strike upon a deal to team up to find Penelope a husband, only to discover a frisson between themselves, perhaps. Jonathan Bailey, Simone Ashley, Claudia Jessie, Jessica Madsen, Golda Rosheuvel, Hugh Sachs, Adjoa Andoh, Daniel Francis, Hannah Dodd, Harriet Cains, Bessie Carter, Polly Walker, Martins Imhangbe and Emma Naomi all return. Bridgerton‘s third season will be released in two parts: Part 1 premieres May 13, while Part 2 hits Netflix on June 13.
Launching on May 24 is the big-budget sci-fi movie Atlas. The Jennifer Lopez-led feature tells the story of Atlas Shepherd, a data analyst who must set aside her mistrust of AI when she faces problems during a voyage to apprehend a renegade robot with which she has shared history. Atlas is directed by Brad Peyton and the cast includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown, Gregory James Cohan, Abraham Popoola, Lana Parrilla and the always great Mark Strong.
Movies added to Netflix in May include Dumb and Dumber To, Blended, Eat Pray Love, The Edge of Seventeen, The Equalizer, The Gentlemen, Hellboy (2019), Hulk, Jumanji (1995), Liar Liar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, The Matrix Resurrections, Mortal Kombat (2021), Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Nutty Professor, The Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, Public Enemies, Ride Along, Shrek, Shrek Forever After, Starship Troopers, Traffic, The Wedding Planner, White House Down, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Sing Street, War Dogs and The Young Victoria.
