Film enthusiasts in Kerala are in for a nostalgic treat as several classic films are scheduled for re-release in theatres. Last year, the digitally remastered 4K Dolby Atmos version of Mohanlal's iconic movie 'Spadikam' was re-released in theatres, sparking demands for similar releases of cult classics from nostalgia film lovers.
The digitally remastered version of the movies promises to transport audiences back in time, allowing fans to relive the magic on the big screen. Among the classics making their way back to theatres are 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha', 'Manichitrathazhu', 'Devasuram', 'Aaraam Thampuran', and 'Devadoothan'.
SCube Films is bringing the legendary Malayalam movie 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha' to theatres after 35 years. The preliminary work for this re-release has been completed. The iconic Mohanlal movie 'Manichitrathazhu', released in 1993, has completed the digital remastering process and is ready for re-release on either July 12 or August 17. The film is being re-released in collaboration with director Fazil and producer Swargachitra Appachan.
Discussions are underway with major companies regarding the overseas rights of the film, as informed by D Soman Pillai, the owner of Kollam-based Matinee Now, who led the remastering efforts.
Preparations for the re-release of other classics such as 'Kaalapani', 'Valyettan', 'Devasuram', 'Aaram Thampuran', and '1921' are also being undertaken by Matinee Now.
The Mohanlal movie 'Devadoothan' is set for a re-release as well, with 4K editing and DI (Digital Intermediate) work already completed. Producer Siyad Kokker has stated that the film is intended to hit theatres within the next two to three months.
Producer Maha Subair is working on the preliminary tasks for the re-release of the Mammootty-starrer 'Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha', released in 2008. Producer Kireedam Unni has also expressed plans to re-release the iconic Mohanlal movie 'Kireedam'.
The re-release is anticipated to attract not only older generations eager to relive these films but also young moviegoers. Recently, the Tamil industry saw a rise in re-release sprees with the likes of 'Paiyaa' and 'Ghilli'. Surprisingly, these movies did well at the box office, prompting makers to revisit the old classics.
