Malayalam new releases
PVR dropped a bombshell with the boycott on Malayalam movies on its screens. This will affect a set of highly anticipated movies—Jai Ganesh, Aavesham, and Varshangalkku Shesham—that are scheduled to be released during Vishu. The decision comes after the content sharing dispute with the producers’ association.
There will be no ticket bookings for Malayalam movies releasing today. It is reported that Malayalam movies will not be screened on Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram PVRs. New Malayalam movies are also not being released on PVR-Inox, which has just started in Forum Mall. It is believed that the situation where PVR is boycotting the release of new Malayalam movies across the country will cause losses. Due to this, Fahadh Faasil's Aavesham, Vineeth Sreenivasan's Varshangalkku Shesham, and Unni Mukundan's Jai Ganesh have been suspended.
UFO and Qube companies used to master the digital content of Malayalam movies that had been shot and delivered them to theaters. Producers of Malayalam films had complained that they were charging high rates. Digital service providers also collected a fee from the producers along with the fee paid by the theater owners to deliver the digital print to the theaters.
The producers questioned the need to pay a high amount to deliver the film when a film can be delivered to theaters for less than Rs 6,000 through Producer's Digital Content. The Malayali producers started a mastering unit through a digital content system, which enraged PVR. Producers have demanded that digital content be used in newly constructed theaters, which led to a controversy in the newly opened theaters in Forum Mall. All the meetings to find a solution saw no end to the ongoing issue.
PVR accepts bookings for all other movies except Malayalam. Prithviraj's Bollywood film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Ajay Devgn's film Maithan are currently being screened on PVR in Hindi, Tamil, and English.
