In Shirley, Regina King embodies the indomitable spirit of Shirley Chisholm, the revolutionary political icon who dared to dream big. Under the direction of John Ridley, who won an Academy Award for his 12 Years a Slave screenplay, this future Oscar contender revisits the pivotal year of 1972, when Chisholm became the first Black woman to run for a major party's presidential nomination. Already a pioneer as the first Black woman in the US Congress since 1968, Chisholm's journey from Brooklyn to the national stage is a testament to her unparalleled resilience and vision. King undoubtedly brings her A-game to this important story.
Inspired by Liu Cixin’s celebrated novel, the Eiza González vehicle 3 Body Problem spans the globe and the annals of history, from the tumult of China's Cultural Revolution to the high-stakes intrigue of modern-day Oxford and the United Nations. Courtesy of visionaries David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo, this grand foray into science fiction aims to showcase humanity interconnected across time and space, facing existential threats that challenge the very fabric of reality. As the laws of nature mysteriously collapse, a group of exceptional scientists and a determined detective come together to confront the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. With its rich historical backdrop and cutting-edge ideas, 3 Body Problem is a must for sci-fi fans.
In Bodies Bodies Bodies, a hurricane party featuring a group of affluent friends turns sinister as their playful game of the same name spirals into real murder and mayhem. This satirical slasher, featuring Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, and Rachel Sennott, delves into the darkest facets of Gen Z, blending sharp humor from an all-star cast (that also includes Pete Davidson and Lee Pace) with a critique of toxic friendships and social media's veneer. Director Halina Reijn crafts a claustrophobic nightmare that's as much a social commentary as it is a thrilling horror, delivering a bold, biting satire that encapsulates the fears and flaws of a connected generation.
Season 2 of Buying Beverly Hills invites viewers back into the high-stakes, high-drama world of luxury real estate, helmed by the indefatigable Mauricio Umansky and his family. This season, the stakes are higher, the properties more lavish, and the family drama more intense as they navigate the unpredictable waves of the 90210 real estate market. With the addition of Sophia, the latest family member to join The Agency, the Umansky clan faces new challenges that threaten to upend their close-knit unit. Against the backdrop of glamorous Beverly Hills, this season promises a rollercoaster of emotions, alliances, and trials that could redefine the family and their empire.
Andragogy, a Toronto International Film Festival selection directed by Wregas Bhanuteja, is a vivid and often startling exploration of the chaos unleashed by social media's shadow. This film delves into the life of Prani (Sha Ine Febriyanti), a dedicated schoolteacher admired for her integrity and unique disciplinary measures. When a seemingly minor act of civic courage becomes viral fodder, Prani finds herself at the center of a social media storm, jeopardizing her reputation and aspirations. Through a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and whimsical music, Bhanuteja crafts a narrative that challenges the viewer to reflect on the quick judgments made in the digital age.
