Filmmaker-actor Sundar C is gearing up for the release of Aranmanai 4, the fourth installment in the Aranmanai franchise. The director, one of the few from the 90s era who remain in the scene, has managed to come up with one of the most successful franchises in Tamil cinema only equaled by Raghava Lawrence’s Kanchana film series. However, despite his commercial success, Sundar C is aware that his films lack patronage from critics. In a recent interview, Aranmanai 4 director opened up about the negative criticism his films receive.
“When you become a commercial filmmaker, you have to be ready for the criticism. You need to develop a thick skin because commercial films are not going to get good reviews. They are ‘critics’. I think, maybe if they appreciate commercial films, they might get cast out of the intellectual circle. They have different sets of films… even if they aren’t commercially successful, they might get good reviews,” he told The Hindu.
However, Sundar C doesn’t have a bone to pick with critics because he is bothered only about his target audience. “They rate commercial films a bit less than the rest. I am not blaming them. But I think only about my target audience… It’s mostly family audience. So, I am not going to make vulgar or violent films. If you come to Aranmanai in the mood for Schindler’s List, it won’t be good.”
The filmmaker also addressed a long-lasting criticism against him that he uses glamour to sell his films. The director hit back saying, “See, till 2010, glamour was like an integral portion of a film. It will be part of the songs and also a bit of film scenes. Now, it is not necessary. But I feel that only I get asked such questions about glamour. If you take all the big heroes’ films, there will be one or two such songs… Also, a lot of commercial films have glamour. It is even forced. So, I am saying don’t just find fault with me (laughs).”
Starring Tamannaah Bhatia, Raashii Khanna, and Sundar C in the lead roles, Aranmanai 4 will be released in theatres on May 4.
