Biju Menon | Photo: B Muraleekrishnan/Mathrubhumi
Malayali audience has always embraced Biju Menon's versatility as an actor, whether it be his portrayal of the funny politician in "Vellimoonga" or the serious cop in "Ayyappanum Koshiyum.".
While his portrayal of Circle Inspector Jayashankar in the recently released "Thalavan" is similarly earning praise in theaters, the veteran actor is getting ready for his next film, "Nadanna Sambavam.".
In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Biju Menon talks about his upcoming projects and the success of the film ''Thalavan.
How happy are you with your upcoming project 'Nadanna Sambavam' gearing up for release while 'Thalavan' continues to run successfully in theaters?
Thalavan and Nadanna Sambavam are two films that I did at two different times. It's just that they are being released side by side. I am glad that both are different genres. While Thalavan is a serious investigation thriller, the other one is a fun movie that tells the story based on an incident that happened one day. The film proceeds with the problem my character has to face as he and his family come to live in a housing colony. Some people there find it difficult to accept his character's mannerisms and the events that follow. It is believed that this is a movie that can be enjoyed by all the family members. Suraj Venjaramoodu, Lijomol, Shruti Ramachandran, Johny Antony, and a handful of other great actors are playing the lead roles in the movie. We can relate to each of them as characters we have seen somewhere in our lives.
Your films released this year were superhits. Is this your lucky year?
Now, as I am acting in a Tamil film directed by A R Murugadoss, everyone on set is fascinated by the recent rise of Malayalam cinema. They ask me about the secret to our continuous success. I explained to them that in Malayalam cinema, the story is the true hero. Unlike industries like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, ours operates with more budget constraints. Therefore, I told them we focus on telling compelling stories even with limited resources.
Did you intentionally choose characters that are very different from the ones you did before?
I choose the best roles from the offers I receive. No one wants to play cliché characters. While certain films are unavoidable, I am always striving to explore new and diverse roles. Ultimately, the audience decides the fate of our work. The joy comes from receiving positive responses in theaters and the overall success of the film, which also validates our hard work.
Post-COVID-19, there was initial fear when audiences hesitated to return to theaters. There was concern that people might stop going to theaters altogether, leading to more movies being released on OTT platforms. However, it didn't happen. Today, there is confidence that if a movie is good, audiences will support it in theaters. This audience support fuels our creativity to explore new kinds of films and to select diverse characters.
Can we expect Thalavan 2?
Director Jis Joy and his team are planning something. We won't rush into making a movie solely to create a sequel. However, they are open to the idea of Thalavan 2 if a strong script emerges. The discussions are ongoing.
