The announcement of the re-release of Thalapathy Vijay’s iconic action-packed entertainer, Ghilli, has excited the fans. With its 20th anniversary approaching, the film is ready to set a new benchmark for re-released movies. The hype for Ghilli is potentially rivaling the opening-day collections of new Tamil releases.
Numerous theaters across Tamil Nadu, including the prestigious Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai, are gearing up to screen Ghilli on their main screens. This highlights the excitement surrounding the film’s return to the big screen. Vettri Theatres, a two-screen establishment in Chennai, has already witnessed an overwhelming response. Tickets for the opening weekend are already sold out, and bookings for Monday shows are now open.
Ghilli will re-release on April 20, 2024, after 20 years from its original release date. The action-entertainer also stars Trisha Krishnan and Prakash Raj in pivotal roles. Rakesh Gowthaman, the owner of Vettri Theatres, took to Twitter to express the staggering advance bookings. He stated, “6K tickets sold in advance bookings for #GhilliInVettri. This is the biggest opening recorded ever in History for a Re-Release.”
Reflecting on the current scenario, Rakesh commented on the industry’s dependence on quality content, regardless of language, noting the recent trend of Tamil Nadu theaters showcasing Malayalam films to attract audiences. Despite the challenges faced by the Kollywood box office post-Pongal, there remains optimism for a potential turnaround in the latter half of 2024.
Beyond Tamil Nadu, the re-release is also expected to garner a warm reception in neighboring states like Karnataka and Kerala. This huge love further solidifies its status as a beloved classic. Stakeholders in the Tamil film industry are hopeful that the revival of past blockbusters like Ghilli will help break the dry spell at the box office.
The film is also available to stream on platforms like Disney Plus Hotstar, SunNXT, and OTTplay Premium. As the countdown to the re-release of Ghilli continues, anticipation is running high for one of Tamil cinema’s most loved classics.
