With their unique storytelling and exceptional direction, Malayalam movies have a charm that sets them apart from other South Indian films. Each script brings a distinct narrative that captivates you, making you forget your surroundings for those few hours while you’re watching the film. Explore our curated list of the best and latest Malayalam movies available on Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar in May 2024.
OTT releases this week
Think of the highest-grossing Malayalam film worldwide, and this year’s latest released movie Manjummel Boy tops the list with Rs 241.56 crores. This intense survival thriller boasts an impressive IMDb rating of 8.7. The story follows a group of friends on a daring mission to rescue their comrade who disappears in the depths of the Guna Caves. Bringing real-life tales to the silver screen is not an easy feat. Still, director Chidambaram deftly navigates this challenge and delivers a story that seamlessly blends human emotions and showcases the bond of friendship in the most realistic manner.
Malayalam movies
Prithviraj Sukumaran delivers an outstanding performance in this Malayalam movie directed by Blessy. Based on a true story and Benyamin’s book, the film follows Najeeb Muhammed, an Indian migrant worker in Saudi Arabia. Trapped in a harsh reality, Najeeb finds himself herding goats in the desert. The movie sheds light on the challenges faced by Keralites abroad. With remarkable ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, it’s a must-watch for those who love captivating stories. Featuring a stellar cast including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Amala Paul, and Jimmy Jean-Louis, the movie has become one of the top-grossing South Indian films of the year, nearing the Rs 153 crore mark at the box office worldwide. However, it’s banned in all Khaleeji countries except the UAE, much like the novel it’s based on.

Directed by Arun Bose, this film tells the heartwarming tale of two couples and their journey through modern relationships. One couple, Shinu and Sherin, are married, while the other, Rony and Meenakshi, are expecting their first child. However, while Meenakshi is pregnant and excited about parenthood, Shruti appears hesitant about having children. The movie also features a new version of the song Marivillin Gopurangal from the 1998 film Summer in Bethlehem, composed by Vidyasagar.

Released in theatres on April 11, 2024, this movie continues to attract audiences across Kerala and South India, nearing the Rs 150 Crore mark at the box office. Now, it’s getting ready for its debut on OTT platforms this month. The story revolves around three teens who come to Bangalore for college and find themselves in a brawl. To resolve the issue, they seek assistance from a local gangster. This movie is packed with suspense, laughter, and surprising twists, making it one of my favourites. Directed by Jithu Madhavan, this Malayalam action comedy stars Fahadh Faasil, Hipzster, Mithun Jai Shankar, Roshan Shanavas, Midhutty, Sajin Gopu, and Mansoor Ali Khan.
