Director's Insights
Director Vineeth Sreenivasan explained that the first half of the film is inspired by stories from his youth, shared by figures like his father and other industry veterans. The second half reflects on contemporary Malayalam cinema and his personal experiences.
In an interview, Vineeth talked about his influences. He remembered listening to his father's stories about life in Madras and the film industry. As a student, Vineeth loved reading Malayalam film magazines like Nana, Vellinakshatram, and Chithrabhumi. These stories and the picture of Madras they painted inspired Varshangalkku Shesham.

Vineeth also recalled actors Mukesh and Innocent sharing funny stories about their lives in Madras and their film experiences during stage shows. Vineeth, who lives in Chennai (formerly Madras), said the city always fascinated him. Varshangalkku Shesham shows Madras in the 1970s and 1980s, covering 50 years and the changes in the film industry.
Vineeth had the idea for the story since college but wasn’t confident enough to make it. After making Hridayam, he felt ready and started writing the script in 2022. The story of Varshangalkku Shesham was inspired by two screenplays written by his father. Vineeth also used an idea from director Priyadarshan, who told him about an incident in a film studio that Vineeth included in the film.
For now, Varshangalkku Shesham will stream exclusively on SonyLIV. It is yet to be confirmed if the film will appear on other streaming platforms in the future.
