What to watch this weekend.
Each week, I search high and low for all the best (and sometimes worst) new streaming content out there, plus new theatrical releases and basically whatever movies, TV shows, documentaries and so forth I think readers will be interested in and compile it in this friendly neighborhood streaming guide.
This week is a little lighter on content than the last couple, but there’s still some new shows and movies worth checking out, and plenty of ongoing shows that I’m following closely—and you should to! Check out last weekend’s streaming guide below:

Alright, let’s dive right in . . . .
I thought Season 1 of The Bear was terrific—if stressful—but for whatever reason I never got around to Season 2. Now Season 3 is out in its entirety on Hulu, and I have even more anxiety-inducing service industry drama to catch up on! The ongoing misadventures of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) and his restaurant crew dropped in full on Hulu this past Wednesday.
I was a big fan of That 70s Show back in the day and as such was always a little worried that That 90s Show would just disappoint men, despite being someone who grew up in the 90s (or maybe because of that). I’m curious if any readers watched the first season and what you thought. In any case, the second season is now on Netflix as we return to Kitty and Red’s basement for more shenanigans.
This one is actually in theaters as well as on Apple TV+ this weekend. Fancy Dance folows Jax (Lily Gladstone) on a roadtrip with her niece Roki (Isabel DeRoy-Olson) on a search for Roki’s mother. I’m always happy to see new indigenous movies and this has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes (81% with audiences).
Kevin Costner’s sprawling Western epic is just the first of four planned movies, two of which hit theaters this summer. Critics are only giving this one a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences are much more receptive (71%). I think it looks good, very much like a classic old-school Western with all the benefits of modern film technology. But man, it’s 3 hours long! The main complaints seem to be that it’s too long, too slow and too disjointed with a story that’s hard to follow and a sprawling cast with no main character to hold it together. Hopefully things tighten up in Part 2 . . . .
I’m not a huge horror movie guy, but I do enjoy the type of scares A Quiet Place offers up. I suppose it’s part horror, part thriller. In my review of the original film I said it was basically that scene with the velociraptors hunting the kids in Jurassic Park but for the entire movie. The sequel was also good (not as good, but a damn good sequel) and by all accounts so is this prequel. John Krasinski has created a solid little post-apocalypse franchise here, and this shows it in its earliest hours.
I really enjoyed the latest Studio Ghibli film, The Boy And The Heron. It’s a very peculiar film, but so are most of Hayao Miyazaki’s films. This one takes place in the aftermath of WWII in Japan, but also in a magical land beyond. Here’s my review. The film is available now on VOD.
I’m reviewing House Of The Dragon each week here on this blog. The second episode comes out this Sunday and since I finally got screeners, I’ll have my review up directly after it airs. So far, the Game of Thrones spinoff does not disappoint in its second season. It’s not as fun as Thrones, which just had so many characters you cared about, but this rather bleak look at the Targaryen civil war is still incredibly compelling television. I’m four episodes into The Boys Season 4 and while it’s not my favorite season of the show, I think it’s pretty good. Sometimes a little heavy-handed where it could be more clever, and sometimes I feel like we’re spinning on a wheel rather than moving the story forward, but still funny and gory and entertaining.
I’m all caught up on Presumed Innocent and it’s really engaging so far. I’m very much into it and will need to get a review posted soon. If you enjoy a good, tense mystery where it’s not at all obvious whether the main character is guilty or innocent, this is quite good. Jake Gyllenhaal is great as prosecuting attorney Rusty Sabich who (SPOILERS) is accused of killing his colleague and lover, Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve).
Blue Lights is one of my favorite relatively new UK police procedurals. I’ve seen the entire second season which is currently dropping episodes weekly on BritBox, and the Northern Ireland crime show is still quite good, though not as good as Season 1. Some of the story beats just feel way too rushed which makes them a bit too contrived, and none of it hits quite as hard as Season 1. I still highly recommend the series, mostly because I love the characters and it’s a really fascinating glimpse into policing a very culturally divided city with a history of paramilitary violence.
The Acolyte is a major disappointment so far, even with a fifth episode that was a lot better than the first four. I like some of the ideas they have going, but as far as Star Wars go this show is just too poorly written to impress. Three episodes remain.

Other stuff to keep an eye out for this weekend includes the fantastic period drama Elizabeth starring Gwyneth Paltrow about the rise of Queen Elizabeth I (on Starz), the 77th Annual Tony Awards (June 16th on Paramount+) and a new episode of Doctor Who on Disney+.
