Everything to stream this weekend on all your favorite streaming services.
A big weekend for new TV this weekend and it’s the first of a stretch. We have a lot to cover today including the most highly-anticipated The Walking Dead spinoff yet, a remake of a beloved classic and some other cool stuff.
Instead of pre-ambling and re-ambling and just plain rambling, let’s dive right in! Here’s everything new and noteworthy to watch this weekend . . . .
Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira return as Rick and Michonne in The Ones Who Lived, a new TV series that—once upon a time, a long time ago—was supposed to be a set of films. I’m not sure the difference really matters. I haven’t seen this yet so I can’t speak to its quality, but you can bet I’ll be watching Sunday night along with every other Walking Dead fan who still cares and I’ll have my recap/review posted here on this blog after. I’m both excited and hesitant. I wouldn’t say I care enough to dread this being bad, but I’m a little tired of hoping for more and being given so little from the creators of this franchise at this point. I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.
I’ve already started watching Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon fantasy Western anime series Avatar: The Last Airbender and I am sad to report being mostly very disappointed. I have written a review (here) and made a video about the show (here) and will continue to cover as I continue to watch. But it does not hold a candle to the original.
I noticed Resident Alien pop up on Netflix where I’d never seen it before and I was so excited to share it with all of you who may have missed this absolute gem of a show. Alan Tudyk is simply outstanding in this wonderful comedy about an alien who comes to destroy the planet, takes on a human disguise and then . . . well you just have to watch and find out. It’s brilliantly funny, deals with indigenous issues and small town America in really clever and thoughtful ways, and is just a very unique and wonderful series. I don’t want to spoil it, but please do give it a go. Oh, and I just learned that Season 3 started airing on SyFy and Peacock a couple weeks ago. How did I miss that???
An adult animated comedy series about a pair of space alien doctors working on a dangerous case that could potentially destroy the universe. I’m not sure it’s up my alley exactly but it might be up yours. Kieran Culkin is in it and I love that guy.
I still haven’t seen the new Elvis movie, but I’m almost more interested in A24’s Priscilla, though maybe that is because it runs less than 2 hours whereas Elvis is closer to three. Might actually make for a good double feature if you have a long day with nothing to do.
I have mixed feelings about this martial-arts multiverse flick, but it sure was a massive hit and won basically all the awards. I think it was good but ran too long and frankly, I’m just really damn sick of the multiverse. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a good movie despite its flaws (and very weird—consider watching it on psychedelics!) and now it’s on Netflix!
I’ve been curious about this adorable looking A24 film for ages but still haven’t seen it. The trailer is super cute, though. It’s about a seashell named Marcel that wears shoes and is trying to find his family. If you’re looking for something offbeat and heartwarming, this might be the one for you.
Outside of this new stuff, we have the Halo show still running its second (improved but still controversial) season which I still haven’t managed to get into. The big name off the list this week is True Detective: Night Country which wrapped things up with a rather dreadful finale last Sunday. C’est la vie.
I’ve got other recommendations recently posted including:
Apologies for the lack of a guide last week. I had some medical/personal stuff go down that really threw me for a loop. But you know me.
What are you watching this weekend? Did I miss anything? Any cool new recommendations—I always love new things to add to my ever-growing list of stuff I’ll never live long enough to watch! Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.
